The Caliph Abderrahman III had this magnificent palace city built just after proclaiming the Umayyad Caliphate. Today, the archaeological site lies about 8 km from Cordoba at the foot of the Sierra Morena mountains, a site which captivated the caliph over a thousand years ago and even today entrances visitors with its beauty and history.
The visit to Medina Azahara is a journey back in time. Here, unlike other Cordoban monuments, there are no superimposed remains from different eras nor reused materials from other civilizations – all the materials used here were new. Columns, capitals, bronze and marble were used to create the Caliph's lavish project of building a gleaming new city from which govern one of the most learned, advanced and prosperous kingdoms of the 11th century world. All to no avail, as his fleeting dream was smashed to smithereens soon after by war, barbarism and pillage.
Now, thanks to the archaeological excavations and studies carried out for over a century, we can learn all about the city and how it was built and destroyed. It is our pleasure to guide you on this walk through history and help you unlock the secrets of this intriguing place, which we hope will soon be declared a World Heritage Site.
